By the time of the Normandy landings, the 82nd Airborne Division was a battle hardened outfit with many veterans in its ranks . The ‘All American’ Division, as it was known, had earned a reputation for hard fighting in the Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio landings in the Mediterranean.
